The Chronicles of Narnia

A Mystical Adventure

The characters in the film are a family of four siblings who due to World War II are sent from their home in the city to stay with a friend of the family in the country where they will be out of harms way. The youngest of the four, Lucy, is hiding inside of a large wardrobe and stumbles into a world she never knew existed. At first her siblings struggle to believe the fanciful story of their younger sister, but eventually they too are introduced to Narnia as they are all thrust into a war between good and evil.

On the way they meet many creatures, both friendly and not so friendly, as the adventure unfurls. The children must deal with forgiveness, which is a strong theme dealt with in the film, as well as courage which they will need to battle the White Witch who has crowned herself the Queen of Narnia. Many of the Narnians have taken the side of the Witch, but there remains a group of those who have not lost hope in their all-powerful leader, Aslan.

A View of Salvation

As I mentioned earlier I had read The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe as a child and seeing it on the big screen was amazing. The first time I saw the film was through secular eyes—not having been introduced to the beauty of Christianity—as another fast-paced, action-packed, adventure movie. But having since been baptized and initiated into the Church I watched the film in a completely new light. Never before had I realized the Christian themes like faith, hope, love, forgiveness, and salvation throughout the film. And what I appreciate is that it’s not done in a literal way, but it rather brilliantly hints to the eternal realities of Christian belief that even non-believers can appreciate.

Even though there are a few scenes of violence and battle, this is by no means a bloody film, and is appropriate for most children. It’s a great way for them to learn the truths of Christianity in an entertaining manner. I recommend that families watch this film together and discuss it as they watch. It’s a very well-done film that will definitely be a great addition to your collection and an enriching resource for faith.
