Although He has called you to participate—however seemingly minutely—in the soul-saving, life-changing mission of the Church, He doesn’t expect you to do it all on your own. You see, God makes us His sons and daughters in baptism. We become family.
Then, like any Father, He prepares us for the world. He prepares us for battle, for our life’s work. We never “graduate” from the family, but we do receive a gift, or gifts rather, that will help us to achieve our mission.
“The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD.”
~ Isaiah 11:2-3
I call it the Catholic Toolbelt. The Church calls them the gifts of the spirit. And just as Batman goes out into the dark of night equipped with a belt full of gadgets to beat down the bad guys, so we as Catholics receive, through the Sacrament of Confirmation, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, our Catholic Toolbelt, equipping us to combat the darkness of this world.
