In the Spirit of St. Francis

Although the intent of this book is not to express the theological truths laid out in this prayer, the author does a great job of showing how we can all experience them in our daily lives. It’s extremely accessible in the sense that it is not written for a specific religious group or audience. Anyone—Catholic, Evangelical, even non-Christians—can appreciate the truth found in the words of this great saint.

Nerburn takes each line of the prayer and tears it open to reveal its meaning. In each chapter of the book he uses stories from his own personal lived experiences to help the reader relate. His stories are powerful. His insights are eye-opening.

I think the average person may find the prayer of St. Francis inspiring, yet impossible to live out. Kent Nerburn shows that it is possible and gives practical examples that show that it is quite possible. I recommend Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace to anyone, Catholic or otherwise. Even if you are unfamiliar with St. Francis and his famous prayer, you seek to benefit from the beautiful, poetic words of this little book.
