Later that night, as I read through Psalm 37 I heard God speaking to us with words of comfort.
“Do not be provoked by evildoers; do not envy those who do wrong. Like grass they wither quickly; like green plants they wilt away. Trust in the LORD and do good that you may dwell in the land and live secure. Find your delight in the LORD who will give you your heart’s desire.”
~ Psalms 37:2-4
The Bible is the living Word of God and through these words God can speak to our hearts. I have learned to pray with the Bible, listening attentively to what God is trying to say to me. In this case, He was reminding me that we can’t let others and their dishonesty drive us to anger.
I shared this passage with my wife the next day and not only did the words resonate with us both, but it also reminded me that as a husband and father it is my responsibility to lead my family to God. Whether it be to encourage family prayer, show the importance of Mass, or to listen for God’s voice in the Scriptures, I have commited myself as a head of my wife and family as Christ is the head of the Church.
“For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body.”
~ Ephesians 5:23
You have a responsibility of leading your family to God. Whether you are a husband or wife, father or mother, man or woman, your family is your first priority when it comes to evangelization. It doesn’t necessarily require expert knowledge of the faith, but rather the consistent witness to Christ. In my case, that would mean not letting my anger get the best of me. Rather than lashing out, I turned to God in prayer and He resolved the situation. That trust and fidelity to God is the kind of witness that is necessary in the family.
