He learns to forage for food, to siphon rain water, and finds shelter. But as the days pass he struggles, not only to survive, but to maintain his sanity as he copes with being alone and isolated from the world. Then he receives a message in a bottle, that reads simply, “Hello.”
This mysterious message comes from another “castaway,” a young woman who finds herself in a similar situation. Her name, funny enough, is also Kim. She lives in her room, closed off from the real world, spending all of her time and money online. She has created an online persona and is living a cyber-life. During her nighttime photo shoots of the moon she happens to catch a glimpse of Kim and becomes mesmerized by his sufferings and struggles, watching him everyday almost like a reality TV show. Finally, she builds up the nerve to leave her bedroom—which she hasn’t done in years—and ventures off to the same bridge Kim jumped from and delivers a message.
The Message
This film speaks to the truth that we as humans are made for community. We can’t go it alone. We need each other and we need God. He learns this through the messages that he continues to receive. In his case, it’s those message, that communication with another, that keeps him alive. For the messenger, it is her realization and acknowledgement that true life is interpersonal.
Castaway on the Moon is not a boring drama, in fact, although much of the movie is without dialogue, Kim’s antics provide laughter and tears as you enter into his pain and share in his joy. It’s a great story and the message is one that we all need to hear every once in a while, especially in our modern society. It’s a great movie for all ages, even the kids will enjoy it!
Since “Castaway on the Moon” is a foreign film, you may have trouble finding it in stores. I recommend looking online. I watched it on Netflix.
