Modesty: The New Trend? Articles

Modesty: The New Trend?

On magazine covers, the big, bold letters “sexy” and “hot” are what sell the magazines. Nowadays, the fashion and entertainment industries have made it a taboo to NOT reveal the most sensual aspects of our bodies. In the closets of women, tight-fitted mini-skirts and low cut tops are must have items. For the upcoming spring season according to WGSN, one of the leading fashion trend forecast agencies, the “hottest must have item is a very low V-neck top.” Cleavage of course is not just insinuated, it is actually a beauty fad that leaves viewers with nothing to the imagination. On the runways of many designers, wearing underwear as an outer garment is a fresh new idea introduced to the bold and adventurous woman. Clearly, modesty is the last thing on the minds of these people, but what is the importance of modesty for Catholic women?
When Reverence is Due Articles

When Reverence is Due

The Catholic Church owns some of the most beautiful real estate in the world. This is a cause of controversy for some who believe that the money used to build these extravagant buildings could instead be "given to the poor." This point of view is reminiscent of that of Judas Iscariot in the Anointing at Bethany. So why are Catholic churches so eloquent? Is it overkill? Is it necessary to spend so much money on a building?
Letting God Take the Wheel Articles

Letting God Take the Wheel

Anytime I go somewhere, I drive. I am used to driving and like to be in control of where I am going. I control the speed. I control the direction. I decide the destination. But what happens when I let someone else drive? It feels uncomfortable, because they drive a little slower, they don't brake at the same time I normally would, and they don't know my shortcuts.
The Gospel Continues with You Articles

The Gospel Continues with You

In the day to day hustle of our lives, trying to get ahead or just get by, it is rare that we reflect on how we have been touched by the hand of God. Men Plan, God Laughs. The world would make us believe that we hold our fate in our hand, and though we do have free will, there is a greater power at work that we can only dimly perceive in history.
Mother Teresa and the Pursuit of Holiness Articles

Mother Teresa and the Pursuit of Holiness

A person like Mother Teresa sets an awe-inspiring example of what holiness is in our modern world. To care for the sick, to feed the hungry, to help the poor, and to comfort those who are suffering are all actions to which we are called. It's not to say that we must all become nuns or monks, but we most certainly must make a serious effort to live out the Gospel, to bring to life the words and teachings of Jesus Christ. It might not be popular amongst our peers and our society might tell us otherwise, but deep inside of each one of us there lies a yearning for good and a longing for God.
Of Magnets and Men Articles

Of Magnets and Men

Have you every wondered why it's God that we call out to on our death bed? When we finally come face-to-face with our demise, why do we suddenly find ourselves in a frantic prayer? Or after rejecting God our entire lives and pushing Him away, we hit rock-bottom emotionally, physically, or spiritually and then and only then do we cry out for help. Why now in our feelings of helplessness, loneliness, and despair do we long for He who created us?
Late Night Train to Nowhere Articles

Late Night Train to Nowhere

Yesterday I decided to take the bus to church where I was meeting with the pastoral council. I had just enough money to make it there and back, but since the bus requires exact change and I had neglected to get change beforehand I ended up running out of money. After the meeting was over I was chatting with my fellow council members when I realized I had to get going if I was going to catch the last bus of the night. Once I got outside the church I saw that I was going to have to run to make it. I only had ten minutes and I had to run a mile or I would be stranded with no where to go and no money to get back home.

What If Mary Said No? Articles

What If Mary Said No?

This past Friday, March 25, 2011 we celebrated the Solemnity of the Annunciation. This is the moment when the angel Gabriel is sent to the virgin Mary to proclaim to her that she will become the mother of God. As Catholics we are eternally thankful for Mary's role in salvation.
When In Doubt, Pray Articles

When In Doubt, Pray

Don't you hate when people call you only when they want something? It happens to the best of us. You get the call and at first you are excited, because you haven't heard from them in so long. The familiar sound of their voice brings back fond memories of distant days. You chat for awhile about what's been going on in your lives, until all of the sudden it happens.
You Are What You Eat Articles

You Are What You Eat

In one of my blog posts a couple month’s back titled “Know Jesus, Preach Jesus” I really stressed the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus. And I know the non-Catholic Christians are used to that type of language, but many of my fellow Catholics might think whoa, what’s this guy talking about? So I felt I needed to explain myself a little bit better and get deeper into this topic. Is it important to have a personal relationship with Jesus? Absolutely! But many people might ask, how do I do this? Today I’m going to share some thoughts on this.

As newlyweds, my wife and I are learning alot about each other, life in general, and especially our faith. She is a cradle Catholic, meaning she was born and raised in the Church. I on the other hand was not raised in any particular faith or religion, but I'm not going to get into the story of my faith journey here. We have been faced with some interesting dilemmas throughout our first year of marriage, but the most difficult battles have been the spiritual ones. But we have also been able to grow both closer to each other and to God.
