The Controversy of Pope Francis [Podcast #010]

Pope Francis has been getting a lot of attention both from the mainstream media and Catholic media since his election in May of this year. People love the way his lived example of faith embodies what Christianity is all about, yet he continues to be labeled as a controversial figure in the Church. On this week's episode I explain why he seems to be so controversial.

Happy New Year! Yes, that’s right, we have just entered into the new liturgical year in the Catholic Church. This a great opportunity for you to take stock of your spiritual life and make a New Year’s resolution that matters.

Promise of the Week / The Catholic Fact

After Mary received the good news from the angel Gabriel that she would give birth to the Son of God, she wondered how it would happen. The angel reassured her with a fact and a promise:

“Nothing will be impossible for God.”

~ Luke 1:27

God isn’t just a big version of us. He transcends our human conceptions of Him. We can’t even fathom the greatness of His power and glory. We say that God is omnipotent, meaning almighty or all-powerful. God can do anything. Remember, this is the same God that created the universe by the act of His will. He willed it and it happened. Imagine if you were able to want something so bad that it came to be. I’m not talking the “power of attraction” but the power to create ex nihilo, from nothing. That’s creativity!

This week I’m reading Evangelii Gaudium, the first apostolic exhortation from Pope Francis. Meaning “the joy of the gospel”, this is definitely Francis, unlike Lumen Fidei which was claimed “a work of four hands” due to most of it clearly being penned by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. If you like this blog, than you will love Evangelii Gaudium. It is basically a response to the synod of bishops which met last year to discuss the hot topic of the New Evangelization. Not only does he tell us that evangelization is important, if not essential to the Christian mission, but he explains the proper way to do it. It is a simple, practical document by a simple, practical pope.
